LOS ANGELES, Sept. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Over 50 years ago, the milestone piece of legislation, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, was passed, upholding the fifteenth amendment of the Constitution and granting the right to vote to every eligible American.
Women’s March Los Angeles (WMLA) is saluting this historical turning point with a week of action from September 22-29, centering around National Voter Registration Day (9/25). These events are geared toward individuals who stand up for human rights, voting rights, civil liberties, tolerance, and diversity.
The week opens with the South Bay Pledge to Vote Rally, jointly hosted by National Women’s Political Caucus South Bay (NWPC), a multi-partisan organization dedicated to increasing women’s political participation.
Select confirmed speakers include Maxine Waters – U.S. Representative for California’s 43rd congressional district; Mayor Patrick Furey of Torrance; Honorable Jan Perry – LA City Council (Ret.); Janice Hahn – LA County Supervisor District 4; and Lisa Bloom – Television Legal Analyst & Civil Rights Attorney; amongst others.
On site to register eligible voters will be Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder, Dean Logan, and his team.
“There are people who are risking their lives and the lives of their children to come to this country for freedom,” says Emiliana Guereca, Founder & Executive Director of WMLA. “Don’t you think we should risk a little traffic to vote for ours? Everyone’s future is at stake!”
