Los Angeles — After a decorated professional basketball career spanning 13 WNBA seasons, multiple All-Star selections, and two Olympic gold medals, Angel McCoughtry is redefining success through filmmaking. As she prepares for the March production of her feature directorial debut Bolted and the February 1 Prime Video premiere of her short film Bygones, McCoughtry is building a new creative path grounded in patience, intention, and long-form storytelling.
Bygones, written and directed by McCoughtry, follows a young basketball player who has lost her confidence and a former coach with a complicated past who becomes her mentor. As their relationship deepens, a painful secret emerges, forcing both characters to confront forgiveness, accountability, and healing. The film explores themes of mentorship, identity, and unresolved emotional conflict, reflecting McCoughtry’s own transition into a slower, more reflective creative process.
Through McCoughtry Entertainment, McCoughtry is developing a slate of projects centered on character-driven, culturally resonant stories that amplify underrepresented voices. “I wanted to move from being the subject to being the architect,” she said. “McCoughtry Entertainment gives me the freedom to tell stories with intention, nuance, and truth.” Her long-term vision focuses on building a body of work rooted in purpose, representation, and lasting cultural impact rather than speed or volume.
