Watch ‘The Short Game’ – Two Creative Minds Reveal the Inspiration Behind the Film (NBC 5, Texas Today)

NBC 5’s Texas Today sat down with director Frank Sansa and writer Joran Christiansen to discuss what inspired The Short Game, an independent drama rooted in family, resilience, and the bonds that shape us. Sansa shared that the project was a true labor of love — drawn from his experiences as a former high school golfer and as the father of an autistic son. Many of the film’s heartfelt moments stem directly from real life, woven into a story about a young athlete chasing a golf scholarship while learning to care for his autistic younger brother. “It’s really a reconciliation story between the two brothers,” Sansa said, highlighting how their relationship evolves into something transformative.

Christiansen described a decade-long scripting process that began with three writing partners spread across the country, collaborating through remote tools long before it became common practice. After outlining the story and trading scenes back and forth through weekly Zoom sessions, the team eventually brought in longtime producer David Parks, who helped guide a major rewrite alongside his screenwriter wife. What began as a passion project between friends matured into a heartfelt, character-driven script centered on brotherhood, sacrifice, and understanding.

The filmmakers emphasized that The Short Game offers a perspective not often seen in stories involving autism: it focuses on the older sibling’s journey, showing how neurodiversity impacts the entire family dynamic. The decision to cast a young autistic actor in the role of Ethan was intentional and essential to the film’s authenticity. As Christiansen explained, audiences can expect moments of both emotion and uplift — a story that acknowledges life’s challenges but celebrates connection and growth. Shot entirely in Sherman, Texas, the film is now playing in select theaters. Viewers can watch the full trailer or find showtimes at theshortgamemovie.com.
