NBC 6’s South Florida Live welcomed actor Ben Krieger to discuss The Short Game, an indie sports drama rooted in family, perseverance, and the power of embracing those closest to you. Krieger stars as Jeremy Avery, a high school golfer whose ambitions for a college scholarship collide with the responsibility of caring for his autistic younger brother, Ethan — played authentically by young autistic actor Owen Himfar. Filmed in Texas over a grueling 21-day shoot in 110-degree heat, Krieger said the project was a true team effort, one that blended the heart of a family-first drama with the underdog spirit of a sports story.
Krieger connected deeply with the competitive drive at the core of Jeremy’s character, but said the role taught him something far more meaningful. “You also have to be a son and a brother,” he shared, explaining how the storyline helped him understand that success is tied not only to ambition but to the support and love that surround you. Working alongside Himfar left a lasting impression as well. Krieger praised the young actor’s confidence and communication, saying Owen taught him lessons in self-advocacy both on and off the screen.
For Krieger, bringing the film home to South Florida was especially emotional. Raised in Palm Beach Gardens and trained through local arts programs, he credits his teachers and community theater mentors for shaping his career. Now, as The Short Game arrives in theaters, he hopes South Florida families will experience the film’s uplifting message. With themes of connection, neurodiversity, and the bonds that carry us forward, the movie invites audiences to see themselves — and their families — reflected in a story built on heart.
