Pasadena Weekly highlights the remarkable journey of Alberto Crane — world champion martial artist, UFC veteran, and owner of three Legacy BJJ academies — whose memoir All In: Lessons On and Off the Mat captures a life shaped by resilience, reinvention, and relentless adaptability. Crane’s upbringing stretched across continents, from his early years in Santa Fe to childhood in Munich and a whirlwind move to New York as a teenager. That global upbringing became the foundation for a life unafraid of change. After returning briefly to Santa Fe, a single conversation about Brazil’s martial arts scene redirected his path entirely. Within weeks, Crane moved to Rio de Janeiro, immersed himself in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and eventually rose to become a world champion.
His journey later brought him to Southern California, where a tournament — and meeting the woman who would become his wife — rooted him in Glendale. By 2010, he opened Legacy BJJ Pasadena, the first of three academies now serving Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale. Crane built his schools with a community-first philosophy and a simple motto: One team, One goal. Over the years, he has mentored countless students to black belt level and created supportive environments centered on discipline, humility, and connection.
But Crane’s greatest test arrived in 2007, when he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis — a condition that threatened not only his career, but his mobility. Drawing on a lifetime of mental toughness, he refused to accept the prognosis. Crane rebuilt his life through holistic changes, adopting a Paleo-inspired diet, reducing stress, and reshaping his lifestyle with the same discipline he brought to competition. “I decided that MS wasn’t going to break me,” he said. “It’s mind over matter in life.” Today, Crane continues to train athletes, raise his three children, and lead his academies with the same fierce spirit that defined his fighting days.
With a story spanning continents, cultures, and extraordinary challenges, Crane’s memoir has already sparked conversation about a potential film adaptation. He laughs when asked who would play him — suggesting Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson after seeing his recent performance as Mark Kerr — but acknowledges that his life has been full of cinematic twists. Grateful for his family, his students, and the communities of Pasadena, Glendale, and Burbank, Crane credits openness, gratitude, and perseverance for shaping a life he calls “well-rounded and fortunate.” And as All In makes its way into readers’ hands, his story continues to inspire far beyond the mats.
