The Lost Boys of ‘Hook’ Reunite for Film’s 25th Anniversary
Hook may not be everyone’s idea of a great Steven Spielberg film, but the director’s 1991 take on the Peter Pan legend remains a pop-culture touchstone for many children of the ‘90s. The adaptation follows a grown-up Peter (Robin Williams) who must rediscover his inner Pan while trying to save his son from the clutches of Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) in Neverland. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, the actors who portrayed Neverland’s “Lost Boys” have reunited for the first time to discuss the popular hit, as well as their feelings about their illustrious leading man, who committed suicide in 2014.
In an exclusive get-together documented by Entertainment Tonight and orchestrated by production company 22 Vision — which has also been responsible for recent The Little Rascals and School of Rock reunions — the eight men who originally starred as Pan’s clan discussed the making of the film, all while recreating their original group photo.
For Dante Basco, who played mohawked Lost Boys leader Rufio, the blockbuster Spielberg production proved more than a bit stressful, as he told ET: “You have to understand, when you’re 15 and you’re doing this Steven Spielberg movie with megastars — Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts — you know you want to be cool. I don’t know how cool I’m going to look with my belly button out! I mean, through the months it grew on me and now, I mean, years later it’s become this iconic, iconic look that people cosplay around the world.”
Basco also remarked upon his experience working with Williams, and the impact the actor’s 2014 death had on him and his memories of the shoot. “I think for all of us [Robin’s death] was the death of our childhood. There’s sadness there, also there’s a lot of space to kinda celebrate one of the most legendary artists of our time. [Robin] really taught me at a young age what it means to be a star, what it means to be a leader on a set. Everything you want Robin Williams to be he delivered in spades.”
