When Szandra Szabo decided to bring her favorite hometown dessert to the U.S., she knew she had to Americanize it. After all, bigger is better on this side of the pond. So instead of serving chimney cakes — a Hungarian sweet bread — as is, she decided to use them as ice cream cones.
Chimney cakes have been a popular street food in Hungary for hundreds of years, Szabo says, but they’re typically served alone. At House of Chimney Cakes, Szabo and her partner Omar Lara serve them covered in candy, nuts, or cereal, and filled with soft serve and more toppings than you can handle. They’re basically freakshakes on the go.
House of Chimney Cakes opened at the end of 2017 in Anaheim, California, not far from Disneyland. Szabo and Lara make the chimney cakes from scratch daily, rolling the dough around a cylindrical cone and heating them in ovens brought from Hungary.
“Once it’s cooked in the ovens it starts to caramelize,” Lara said. “That’s where we can add any stuff on the outside like Fruity Pebbles, Oreos, coconut, almonds.”
The result is a crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside cake that unravels as you eat it. It’s dipped in a sugar glaze or cinnamon sugar, depending on which you order. If a cinnamon roll and a churro and a donut had a baby, this might be it.
To give you an idea of how crazy these get, the bakery’s signature item, So Hungary Delicious, comes with vanilla soft serve, caramel popcorn, cheesecake brownie bites, popcorn, Twix, salted caramel, and chocolate sauce inside of a sugary glazed chimney cake.
There’s also the Strawberry Cheesecake (Szabo’s favorite), Matcha Monster, and Oreo Overload, plus weekly specialties. Or, you can build your own. Sugar coma, we’re ready for ya.
