“I live and breathe MPAC. It is not a job, it is a life.” — Sue Obeidi, Director of the Hollywood Bureau, MPAC
We are so very honored to have SUE OBEIDI, the Director of the Hollywood Bureau for the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) on our roster of clientele. Highly respected by her peers, Sue serves as a bridge between the Muslim community and entertainment industry, and is on the cusp of completely shifting the dialog and image of Muslims and Muslim-Americans (roughly 33 million in the US today).
Sue is dedicated to improving the public understanding of Islam through the pop culture space, and is currently a consultant on the upcoming live-action film Aladdin. As she looks to continue providing diverse stories about Islam and Muslims, Sue engages the industry by developing relationships with filmmakers, artists, and studio executives. Her goal is not to portray followers of Islam as perfect and infallible beings, but to instead present Muslims as individuals with diverse life experiences.
This past January (alongside celebrities like Chelsea Handler and Connie Britton), Sue spoke at the Sundance Film Festival during the Women’s March. Please watch her speech below:
Additionally, Sue has written op-eds on the industry’s inclusion and representation of Islam and Muslims for top trades including The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and TheWrap and has also been quoted for articles in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, TheWrap, Vanity Fair, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, TMZ, and many more!
As we all know, when it comes to Muslim characters in film and TV, the dominant media portrayal of the Western world often focuses on terrorist groups or violence, seldom offering audiences alternative narratives. Sue and MPAC Hollywood Bureau are attempting to reduce stereotypes by changing people’s way of thinking.
The blend of passion and dedication to shaping a broader vision of Muslims and Muslim Americans makes Sue an immensely interesting and important figure, and her unique perspective is one that needs to be heard.
